No matter industry or size, data collection and analysis can play a critical role in the success of your business. Without the right data or tools in place, it can be impossible to fully analyze performance and make the right user optimizations. The inability to monitor and react to security incidents can set organizations up for risk and brand consequences - [with the average cost of a data breach rising to $4.35 million in 2022.](https://www.ibm.com/security/data-breach) But while real-time data monitoring and alerting is important, it can be difficult to scale - especially if you’re not in the business of data ingestion. 

That’s where log streaming comes in. Log streaming allows you to ingest activity data and receive real-time monitoring and alerts, enabling you to react to security events, analyze performance, and understand user behaviors. We first introduced [Auth0’s log streaming integrations](https://marketplace.auth0.com/features/log-streaming) in 2020, allowing you to easily integrate log streaming into your applications to monitor and keep track of events occurring within your Auth0 tenants. ## Investing in Log Streaming to Enable Rapid Customer Response

[Account takeover attacks increased by approximately 90% from 2020 to 2021](https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbescommunicationscouncil/2022/07/18/the-account-takeover-epidemic-a-wake-up-call-for-chief-digital-officers/?sh=4eb245354196), adding pressure on IT admins to present better account monitoring and protection solutions for their users. Organizations need to be able to quickly see and react to abnormal events within their applications and find areas to improve efficiencies for better user experiences. 

We’ve been offering both log streaming and log extensions as a monitoring solution, but as pressures to react and respond to real-time streaming data grows, we’ve decided to [move away from log extensions](https://community.auth0.com/t/log-extension-deprecation/83017) and fully invest in log streaming. Log extensions delivered a once-viable solution, but we’ve found them difficult to scale to meet the growing needs. By refocusing our efforts, we’re able to launch custom log streaming solutions that are not bound by global management API endpoint limits and rate limits and, ultimately, deliver scalability. For users, this allows you to better react to real-time monitoring and alerts, analyze application performance, and understand your customer behaviors with real-time activity data. 

## Log Streaming Flexibility: Connect Directly to Your Third-Party Data Tools

We’re excited about our new launches for a few reasons. We’ve created a more efficient solution to export log events to your third-party data tools. By shifting our focus to only log streaming, we can continue to enhance our log stream features to make them more customizable for unique use cases. 

A feature we recently implemented, Log Streaming Flexibility, allows users to select which log-type categories they want to stream. This means that instead of filtering the data you want to see at the end of the stream, you can now filter exactly what you want to see directly at the source. The result is better-defined log streams that only send relevant data and easier adoption of log streams with less volume to manage. This functionality also serves as one of the alternatives to the soon-to-be deprecated log extensions functionality.

You've probably heard the expression, "You don't know what you don't know." In other words, if you don't have access to all the usable data you need to inform business decisions, you won't even realize how much is missing from the equation. You need timely insights to empower your teams to work more effectively and deliver more value to users.

People around the world are spending an unprecedented amount of time working remotely and online. We use our personal devices to check in with work; we use our work devices in our homes. Considering all this, real-time monitoring and alerting is more critical than ever. In today's cloud-centric world, it's essential that engineering, architecture, and security teams have the tools they need to monitor their environments consistently, so they can respond to incidents and adapt to trends as close to real-time as possible.

## What Is Log Streaming?

A [log streaming service like Auth0's](https://auth0.com/docs/logs/streams) automatically saves logs to a third-party tool for storage and analysis, so you have the data you need to respond in near real-time to security threats, performance outages, and other issues. Event logs contain valuable insights about user activity, which makes them an important resource for improving operational health and security. Here are some key functionalities enabled by event logs:

* Troubleshooting connectivity problems
* Identifying configuration areas that could use performance improvements
* Identifying where and why service disruptions occurred
* Exposing metrics to identify a target audience
* Pinpointing prime usage times by region
* Identifying bad actors by IP address
* Detecting and optimizing user behavior patterns
* Enabling debugging and integration setup by exposing where customers are experiencing pain and where the flow may be broken

Auth0's log streaming service lets you stream events to a host of integration partners, such as Amazon EventBridge, or any given URL. Log streaming allows you to:

* Export logs to a tool or service you already use
* React to events, such as changed passwords or new registrations, with your own business logic by sending events to custom webhooks (for instance, you can use log streaming to drive automated marketing campaigns upon signup)
* Send events to Amazon EventBridge for processing with AWS Lambda or additional data pipelines

Without log streaming, you don't have the information you need to respond promptly when intervention is called for.

Auth0's log streaming service gives you access to mission-critical information &mdash; identity activity, identity security, account operations, and more &mdash; in near real-time. With log streaming, you can continuously export tenant log events to your existing monitoring and alerting dashboards, streamlining operations, and realizing deeper insights into user behavior.

Auth0 log streaming works by sending micro-batches of streaming events as they are generated in Auth0, giving customers up-to-date information about their Auth0 tenant. Implementing log streaming delivers scalable, resilient, and low-latency access to your Auth0 events.

Tracking trends over time allows you to make informed decisions about product development and system architecture. For example, authentication data can be used to determine how to prioritize development resources: If more users are authenticating from mobile devices, mobile development goes to the top of your priority list.

Another example is tracking peak login times by geographic location to help system architecture teams determine when and where to scale up resources. With much of the world’s population stuck at home under social distancing, quarantine, and mandatory lockdowns, consumer spending on streaming has increased [anywhere from 20% to 50%](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/11/business/economy/coronavirus-us-economy-spending.html) depending on the channel. Given this unprecedented surge in demand, it’s not hyperbolic to say the internet is going through the most intense stress test in its history.

The global desire for entertainment and escapism is [creating a windfall for streaming services](https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/02/investing/coronavirus-stay-at-home-stocks/index.html). Netflix, for example, [more than doubled](https://www.theguardian.com/media/2020/apr/21/netflix-new-subscribers-covid-19-lockdown) its projected number of new subscribers since the pandemic began, and [Disney+ added](https://www.theguardian.com/media/2020/apr/09/disney-netflix-rival-doubles-subscriptions-in-virus-lockdown) 22 million subscribers as well. However, a combination of network slowdowns (and failures) and streaming models that don’t monetize increased traffic means that the situation for streaming media companies is more complicated than it first appears.

Media companies are facing new challenges and new opportunities and working to develop technological solutions that help them weather this historic moment.

## Quarantined Nations Increase Their Streaming Time

We can see the effects of COVID-19 on streaming services by watching how currently quarantined countries (those hits hardest by the virus) have been behaving. Even without a full-blown quarantine, the rise of voluntary social distancing and enforced isolation creates at least a comparable situation.

Though China [is showing signs of recovery](https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/19/asia/coronavirus-covid-19-update-china-intl-hnk/index.html), they implemented mass quarantine first and can give us useful data on streaming behavior. Chinese Nielsen [data shows a significant rise](https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/vxKFJOFeXLWuasuvtu7kBw) in TV viewing, but people are also streaming less conventional content. Quarantined Chinese citizens are getting creative with streaming entertainment, [streaming concerts](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/04/arts/music/arts-coronavirus.html), and [setting up digital clubbing and digital gyms](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-51628693) in their living rooms.

Italy, still in quarantine, has seen a similar rise in streaming content, with an average viewing-time increase of [11% nationally with highs of 17%](https://www.corriere.it/spettacoli/20_febbraio_29/effetto-coronavirus-volano-ascolti-telegiornali-talk-9399464c-5afe-11ea-8b1a-b76251361796.shtml?refresh_ce-cp) in the Lombardy region. During the nationwide quarantine, the Italian telecoms giant Telecom Italian SpA has reported an overall [70% increase in internet traffic](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-12/housebound-italian-kids-strain-network-with-fortnite-marathon) from work-from-home traffic and daytime online gaming.

**The spread of the novel coronavirus is also forcing studios and streaming services to rethink how they create and distribute content**, jumping release dates forward, skipping the box office, and closing down production. This will all lead to greater strain on streaming services and the larger internet.

The outbreak is closing theaters [across the United States and across the world](https://www.npr.org/2020/03/17/817136846/as-coronavirus-shuts-down-theaters-universal-shifts-some-films-to-on-demand), which has been linked to a [13% rise in streaming in the US that could rise up to 60%](https://time.com/5806060/coronavirus-movie-theaters-streaming/) based on prior crises. Production companies are fighting this by streaming [first-run movies straight to home services](https://www.vulture.com/2020/03/coronavirus-is-pushing-movies-online-faster-than-ever-before.html): Universal released _Emma_ and other new movies to streaming services, the new Pixar movie _Onward_ is going right to Disney+, and huge films like _Frozen 2_, _Birds of Prey_, and _The Invisible Man_ are coming much sooner than their prior release date.

While these first-run movies popping up on streaming services does create a large viewership base at home, it may not lead to the massive streaming profits being predicted.

## Streaming Services Are Doing Better Than Expected

It seems like a simple, logical equation: more time at home equals more streaming, which means greater profits for streaming services. But many streaming services, like Netflix, aren’t modeled to reap more profits from an increase in individual streaming time - which is why some were predicting that Netflix might not see a huge boost in profits.

 “If you have to decide between food and your Netflix subscription, it seems to me like you disconnect your Netflix. You’re probably not going to add another $13 a month if you don’t know when your next paycheck’s going to come in.” — Laura Martin, the senior entertainment analyst at Needham & Company, [told the Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2020/mar/12/coronavirus-binge-watching-netflix-streamers-viral).

**Netflix doesn’t monetize volume**. They make their money [from subscriptions](https://www.vox.com/2019/12/17/21025154/netflix-global-growth-numbers-sec-streaming-investors) ([and some product placement](https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/27/bill-gates-ben-does-product-placement-in-netflix-and-amazon-shows.html)). The stock market reflects this uncertainty — Netflix has seen [less than a quarter of a percent of growth](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/?symbol=NFLX) in the last month.

However, despite a [majority of consumers being aware of Netflix](https://morningconsult.com/2019/09/19/in-tvs-content-war-netflixs-shows-capture-biggest-share-of-viewer-awareness/) before lockdown and quarantine conditions, Netflix has seen a surprising surge in subscriptions. In fact, they’ve doubled their estimates: from an estimated 7 million new subscribers [to 15.77 million new subscribers](https://www.theguardian.com/media/2020/apr/21/netflix-new-subscribers-covid-19-lockdown). 

This may be a temporary situation however: considering the shutdown of television and movie production across the board, time will tell if new subscribers will stick around for old content.

**A la carte streaming services like Amazon Prime may see a boost in revenue**. An Amazon Prime subscription [nets users a variety of shows and movies](https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-benefits-what-is-included) for “free,” like Netflix, but the newest releases must be rented or purchased.

Then again, despite the [rush of online ordering](https://blog.aboutamazon.com/company-news/amazons-actions-to-help-employees-communities-and-customers-affected-by-covid-19) and their strong grip on streaming media, [Amazon stock isn’t seeing much of a surge either](https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/?symbol=AMZN). Though the entire stock market has taken a hit, [early predictions that streaming company stock would be safe refuges](https://nypost.com/2020/02/28/how-coronavirus-benefits-netflix-and-other-in-home-services/) may have been premature.

Meanwhile, Twitch — the [most popular streaming service](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/15/business/tech-video-game-streaming-twitch.html) for gaming videos and livestreams — [has seen a 10% growth](https://www.theverge.com/2020/3/18/21185114/twitch-youtube-livestreaming-streamelements-coronavirus-quarantine-viewership-numbers) in viewership as of March 18. Unlike Netflix or Amazon Prime, Twitch monetizes through ads and will likely see a commensurate rise in revenue.

But differing monetization methods don’t tell the whole story. These potential revenue boosts or profit stagnation trends are dependent on network architecture surviving the sudden swell of usage, which may not be a guarantee.

## Strained Network Architecture Will Need Relief

Social distancing and quarantine [are closing schools](https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/03/16/816428320/coronavirus-u-s-enters-quarantine-life-as-many-schools-and-businesses-close) and [workplaces](https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/coronavirus-outbreak-shutdown-america/2020/03/13/d8589434-6550-11ea-acca-80c22bbee96f_story.html), which means a glut of people at home streaming media for entertainment, work, and educational purposes placing unprecedented strain on the internet. Some websites are [even taking bets](https://www.sportsbettingdime.com/news/odds-global-netflix-outage-playstation-network-xbox-live-crash/) on which streaming or web service will go down next.

[Microsoft Teams crashed](https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/microsoft-teams-service-status-crashes-outage-issues-today-work-home-down-a9404771.html) under the increased load of remote video conferences, and YouTube and Netflix have started [throttling quality on their videos](https://edition.cnn.com/2020/03/19/tech/netflix-internet-overload-eu/index.html) in order to reduce bandwidth in the face of the surge. Hulu [users reported a widespread outage](https://www.cnet.com/news/hulu-is-down-as-users-complain-of-videos-not-loading/) on March 20, one that seemed to affect multiple devices:

Many companies [suspended their data caps](https://www.cnet.com/news/carriers-are-suspending-internet-data-caps-during-coronavirus/) and [increased streaming limits](https://www.pcgamer.com/discord-ups-streaming-viewer-limit-while-coronavirus-keeps-people-at-home/) in order to help people stay entertained and in contact during isolation and quarantine. However, these acts of generosity may increase the amount of simultaneous traffic online.

Streaming services may need to try new network solutions to stay ahead of this bloom of potentially network-crashing traffic.

## Private Cloud Boosts Streaming Infrastructure

In the face of this inflating audience and inflating screen time, streaming services using a public cloud may want to consider other options to bolster their network architecture.

There’s nothing wrong with choosing a public cloud; it’s a perfectly reasonable option for a smaller streaming service. Larger streaming services, however, can increase their bandwidth and reduce their downtime and slowdowns with a private cloud solution.

COVID-19 isolation causes internet traffic to increase through every channel — streaming media, [communication](https://www.voicesage.com/blog/communication-best-practices-for-organisations-working-to-contain-covid-19/), [education](https://nypost.com/2020/03/17/coronavirus-in-ny-teachers-prepare-for-unprecedented-challenges-of-remote-learning/), and more — public cloud services are going to be hit from multiple angles at increasing speeds.

A private cloud can help streaming companies with servers dedicated to their businesses. Moreover, a private cloud can be managed or unmanaged, depending on whether you have the time and dedicated staff to maintain it.

## Getting Through This Together, Apart

The COVID-19 pandemic is a situation without precedent, creating entire nations of at-home workers, students, and entertainment-seekers all jumping on the internet at the same time. And with isolation and [lockdown orders](https://www.wsj.com/articles/china-reports-no-new-domestic-coronavirus-infections-for-the-first-time-since-outbreak-started-11584611233) coming [faster every day](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2020/03/20/coronavirus-latest-news/), this isn’t a situation [likely to change in the immediate future](https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/03/16/social-distancing-coronavirus/).

Keeping streaming services going is a necessity for education, entertainment, and the economy. After a discussion with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, the Internal Market Commissioner of Brussels, Thierry Breton, had this to say in [a statement to Politico](https://www.politico.eu/article/brussels-in-talks-with-netflix-about-reducing-internet-congestion/):

 “We all have a joint responsibility to take steps to ensure the smooth functioning of the internet during the battle against the virus propagation.”

With scalable network solutions such as a private cloud, we can deploy and use more servers to keep everyone entertained, educated, in shape, and in contact with one another until the situation is resolved. And, hopefully, we can all get back to business — and life — as usual.

The [Tokyo 2020 Olympics](https://tokyo2020.org/en/) might seem far away — yet for lead engineers in charge of streaming the games, it’s not far enough.

Tokyo will have a total of [_33 official sports_](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/tokyo-2020-summer-olympics-everything-you-need-know-n849301) — five more than the Rio Summer Olympics in 2016. In particular, new sports like surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing, and karate target younger viewers who are accustomed to watching sports (and e-sports) online, uninterrupted, and at high resolution. 

In 2018, major broadcasters like NBC streamed [_thousands of hours_](https://techcrunch.com/2017/11/16/nbc-will-live-stream-a-record-1800-hours-of-the-2018-winter-olympic-games/) of events. The BBC broke viewing records with [22.2 million streams](https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2018/most-streamed-winter-olympics-to-date). The pressure is on in 2020 to reach and impress an even larger audience.

Delivering a high-quality Olympic viewing experience is an enormous challenge from both a bandwidth and a security point of view. [Over 100 million unique users](http://www.nbcuniversal.com/press-release/nbc%E2%80%99s-rio-olympics-most-successful-media-event-history) watched the Olympics across NBC’s digital platforms alone in 2018 — nearly a 30% jump over London’s 2012 games. Users logged in to watch the games on-the-go and on myriad devices. NBC had to build out its operations and rely on more than 1,100 staff to maintain consistent service. 

Since then, the risks for video streamers have become more visible and acute. [In February of 2019](https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/02/chromecast-bug-hackers-havoc/), hackers exposed a vulnerability in Chromecast streaming devices that allowed them to play any video they wanted. More recently, on March 2019, free movie streaming site Kanopy disclosed a [significant breach](https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/kanopy-streaming-data-breach/) of its users’ personal information, including geolocation, device type, and IP address. Hackers know how popular subscription streaming services are today — and are anticipating the 20-day bump that will start next July. 

Below, we offer three ways to future-proof your team’s streaming system, so you can deliver the safe yet thrilling experience your users expect.

## 1. Seamlessly and Securely Authenticate Your Users

Many users watching the 2016 Rio Games online were disappointed. Poor buffering, slow load times (occasionally [_up to 4 hours_](https://www.theverge.com/2016/8/26/12646224/nbc-rio-olympics-2016-coverage-tv-ratings-streaming) in parts of the U.S.), and mediocre in-app experiences caused frustration. Auth0’s [_brute-force shield_](https://auth0.com/docs/anomaly-detection#brute-force-protection), for example, triggers after a set number of failed login or sign up attempts from the same IP address. The shield automatically notifies the administrator, who can immediately respond.

On the back end, admins can tailor their response to a suspected attack in a number of ways, including:

* Blocking the suspicious IP address

* Whitelisting the account, so it doesn’t erroneously trigger a reply in the future

If admins are able to verify the user’s identity and resolve the issue, they can also easily remove the block via an email link.

A tool like brute-force protection is particularly useful with subscription services — where major data leaks have left [millions of user credentials exposed](https://www.troyhunt.com/pwned-passwords-version-5/) to hackers. 

With this cache of personal information, it’s easy for cybercriminals to develop algorithms that churn through username/password combinations — rapidly testing them against a login screen — until they gain access. 

The bad news is that since consumers worldwide expect to [_increase their number of subscriptions_](https://www.emarketer.com/content/which-subscription-services-will-us-consumers-sign-up-for-next), the surface area for such attacks continues to widen. The good news is that it’s not hard to bolster or build your platform to keep these attempts in check. Offloading this specific concern to a third party can also free up your technical talent to focus on larger, more complex tasks that directly relate to your efforts to scale.

## 3. Easily Handle Increased Volume

Even if you’ve developed a winning UX and strengthened your platform against major attacks, video streamers still face the challenge of making sure their service is robust enough to handle the surge in viewers expected for the Olympics.

Now is the time to be updating legacy systems, load testing, and determining specific gaps so that you can make necessary changes in time for Tokyo.

## Integrating Modern Streaming Devices

For the first time last year, the number of [UK subscribers to streaming services](https://money.cnn.com/2018/07/18/technology/amazon-netflix-uk-subscribers/index.html) (15.4 million) exceeded those who pay for traditional satellite and cable services, according to UK media regulator Ofcom.

Media companies are very good at supporting web browsers and broadcast formats. The challenge is connected "smart" devices, especially those with limited input capabilities (e.g. no keyboard or touch screen).

Auth0 makes it simple for media companies to authenticate their users on any device with an internet connection, including smart TVs, media consoles, digital picture frames, etc. On his blog, Auth0 CEO and co-founder Eugenio Pace describes how these devices receive an access token that can then be used to [securely call an API](https://eugeniopace.org/api/deviceflow/arduino/auth0/devicegrant/2019/04/25/calling-secure-apis-from-arduino-part-i.html).

## Content Retail

According to Reuters, [the Nordic countries](https://auth0.com/blog/auth0-expands-european-presence-with-customers-in-belenux-and-nordics/) lead the world in [paying for online news](https://www.pressgazette.co.uk/just-7-per-cent-of-people-in-uk-pay-for-news-reuters-digital-news-report-reveals/), with 22 percent of people on average having paid for online news in the past year. While the numbers are bleaker in other parts of Europe, there is a growing consumer willingness to pay for a [compelling customer experience](https://www.zendesk.com/resources/why-companies-should-invest-in-the-customer-experience/).

Customer experience starts at login -- but the self-destructive tendency is to ask for too much data right away. Customers are turned off by a long sign up form: 86% of users will [quit at registration](https://auth0.com/blog/progressive-profiling/) if the form is too long, while reducing form fields from 11 to 4 increases conversion rates by 120 percent. As one Auth0 customer said, "You shouldn't have to write War and Peace every time you want to register an account."

Auth0 allows media companies to collect information over time as users interact with their platforms. Media customers can use Auth0 to build powerful progressive profiling capabilities. The first time a user signs in, you might ask for their name and email. The second time, you could ask for their location to improve the experience. The third time could be topics of interest, etc.

Using Auth0's flexible Rules, media companies can also [redirect users to a paywall](https://auth0.com/blog/the-role-of-ciam-in-implementing-a-sound-paywall-strategy/) at the most opportune time, based on user behavior. Subscribers can be assigned a "paying" role or group so they never have to log in twice while navigating paid content.

## Family Setup and (Age) Restrictions
